Summary of Interests/Message
My great-grandmother, Rachel Mary Josephine Smith
born in 1848 at Whalley Banks, Blackburn
Chr:1849, St Mary the Virgin, Blackburn Parish Church.
Her parents : Joseph Smith and Nancy (nee Tunstall)
My father's cousin remembered her mother (Rachel) telling her of a "Granny Tunstall" and that the family came from "Proud Preston", but that's all that she remembered.
Preston Marriage located for Rachel's parents, as follows......
Joseph Smith married Nancy Tunstall,
31 August 1845 at Saint Johns, Preston Parish Church.

Joseph Smith was born about 1823 in Preston. He was the son of John and Jane Smith. Joseph's father John Smith was born in Bury about 1791.

________

10 other children of John & Jane Smith, siblings of Joseph, have now been included in the Smith Project A-Z of first names. Their births range from 1821 to 1848 - most of them known to have been born in Preston.  _________________________________________

These are all siblings of one family and as you can see many of their forenames appear to be surnames.
HATTON was the maiden name of their mother and I am hoping that the other names will turn out to have similar significance.
Ann Hatton Smith ; Thomas Barton Smith ; James Henry Smith ; Elizabeth Taylor Smith ; Barton Smith ; Richard Hatton Smith ; Rigby Davies Smith ; William Henry Smith ; Charlotte Hatton Smith ; Jane Annesley Smith ; John Winstanley Smith.
Most of those so far found were cordwainers/shoemakers or boot and shoe retailers. This seems more important than their religion!
THOMAS SMITH
(My Great Great Great Great Grandfather)
Born: n/k. Married: 7 September 1801 at Eccleston by Chorley to:Barbara Hatton.
Occupation: 1828-9 and 1837 Pigots : Chorley: Chapel Street Boot & shoe maker.
If you come across any of these names in your research I would appreciate it if you would please contact me.
________
Update: found my Barton Smith's family and several of the 'surname/forenames' on the 1841 census in Market Street, Chorley. Terry _________________________________________

have a Sydney Smith, son of a Sidney Smith (Note the difference in spelling), son of a John Smith.
Now it seems that Sidney was a RAILWAY PORTER in Lancs in the second half of the 19th C in one of the various rail services that were about at the time but I cannot find out any more about him at all, except that he was born in Brierfield and by the time he married he was living in Nelson where my father was born.
The John Smith I have would have been born about 1820ish as I have nothing more on him than a name. John was ..... well .... so common in those days especially linked to a Smith. There are family members still living in the area but not much is known by them about the family.
The image below:
.... is a group photo taken circa 1924 in the Burnley area. I'm not sure of who the people are that are in the picture except to say that my father Norman Leslie SMITH is standing, wearing the black cap in the rear left. Les, as he was known, left for New Zealand in 1930, he died there in 1986 in his 75th year. (born 1911 in Brierfield, Burnley, Lancs)

NORMAN LESLIE SMITH & pals, Burnley circa 1924

The interesting thing is that my father's brother, James Sidney Smith, was actually born in Portsmouth and not Lancs, but the connection is that with my father, being born Lancs 1911. It appears that about 1904 when Jim was born they were either living for a time or travelling in Portsmouth area.
Their mother, my Grandmother Mary Ellen Smith died in 1933 on the Isle of Wight and was buried at Shanklin, IOW.+
Whilst looking on the IoW site for extra information, I noted that her details did not appear in their lists of deaths. I already had her certificate and so I emailed the site and was told that she was not a death on the IOW and must have been mainland. So I sent a scan of the certificate and lo and behold I received a reply from them to say that she wasn't even recorded on the island but only in London. The result being that they were to add her in - soonest.
The two pictures below, I have edited from a single original that I have, which was taken on the HMS Glorious probably about 1939-40ish.

The person on the left is my Father's brother (James Sidney Smith). The other person, I have no idea who.

January 2007: A note from Carole: Mike has provided the Smith Project with a copy of a database he has compiled from his own research, listing the crew of the HMS Glorious, HMS Ardent & HMS Acasta. These vessels were all sunk off Norway on June 8 1940, with the loss of 1517 lives & only 39 survivors. The database includes many next of kin details.... This is what I have - William Smith, cotton/block printer b abt 1801 at Clayton le Moors = Elizabeth b abt 1801 in Altham. I do not have her surname or their marriage date.
7 children have been found so far with christening dates for all except my grandmother Millicent <Millison>.
1. Mary chr 1823 Altham
2. Ann chr 1825 Altham
3. Millicent b abt 1827/8 I think, in Clayton leMoors(or Altham?)
4.Elizabeth chr 1830 either Altham/Accrington
5.Edmund chr 1846 Clayton leMoors
6.Howarth chr 1837 Altham
7.William chr 1841 Clayton leMoors
It would seem the family stayed in the area throughout.
I have a chipped wine goblet with the following inscription scratched onto it......
Millison Smith May 4 1858.
Millison married 33year old James Sagar in 1860

so perhaps it was an engagement gift or given to celebrate her 30th birthday. May 4 1828 could be a significant date.

Summary of Interests/Message
Having a problem finding any information on my ggrandfather Henry Smith, I do know some facts:
he was born August 3, 1845 Leabridge, Middlesex, England
married Janet Irving Moffat Dec. 25, 1873 in Christ Church, Everton, Walton on the Hill, Lancs.
[Janet's parents: Kenneth Mcauley Moffat, born 23 Nov 1820, Annan, Dumfries, Scotland, died in Liverpool; & Jane Herbertson Peters, born 15 Dec 1822, Scotland]
Henry was a licensed victualler, which Janet took over after his death in 1884.
They had 4 live children and twins that died at birth.
So far I can find his birth, but after that it seems that he fell off the face of the earth until he married.
Christening details: Henry Smith : date: Aug. 30, 1846, St. Paul, Deptford, London
His father is James, and mother is Elizabeth
having a terrible time finding them as well.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Children of Henry Smith and Janet (nee Moffat) were:
Mary Jane b: 21 Nov 1874, Liverpool , d: 5 Sept 1902
Kenneth Moffat b: 1 June 1877, d: July 1954 (my grandfather)
twins stillborn b: 14 Dec 1878
James Henry b: 15 June 1880 , d: 13 July 1882
William Henry b: 18 Jan 1883, d: 11 Aug 1884
** Henry SMITH died in Liverpool on Feb 20 1884. Janet later re-married as follows....
Janet Smith married Samuel Henderson 3 June 1886.
Samuel Henderson was born 1856 in Scotland, died after 1901 in Liverpool. He was a plumber.
Children of this marriage were (all in Liverpool, Lancs.)
