Reopen Old Railways Group

Welcome

The aim of this group is to reopen closed railways in Great Britain. This could be for any purpose - passenger, goods, leisure, or any combination of these. We have no funding so, at present, we act only as a pressure group.

Many people dismiss reopening as a fantasy but we believe it is "an idea whose time has come" because the problem of global warming will necessitate a return from road to rail. Railways can easily be electrified (third rail, overhead, battery or flywheel) and electricity generated by renewables or nuclear power. The nuclear option will obviously be controversial but new types of plant (such as gas-cooled pebble-bed reactors) may make it possible.

Where track is partly blocked by roads or buildings we would:

  • seek a new route or
  • seek local government assistance for compulsory purchase or
  • tunnel underneath and use tube-size rolling stock. For goods, we would introduce small containers which can pass through tube tunnels.
  • The tube-size option would only be used as a last resort because we want the reopened lines to be compatible with the national rail system. This would allow their use as diversions during engineering works on main lines.

Routes currently on our list for re-opening are:
  • Didcot-Newbury
  • Bourne End-High Wycombe
